Bon Iver and his Wisconsin winter heartbreak speak volumes to me. This song in particular Creature Fear speaks to the highs and lows one wants to express but can’t. These Black Can Sessions seem to capture the best out of so many artists. The Black Cab session of Sunset Rubdown’s Follow you Ahead is actually better than the album.

Sticky pod with the knuckle mount second take. Great surf day, waves 4-8 feet. Wind was gusting 25-30 knots. Water was warm. I surfed the inside of the South Haven pier to have a wind break. The waves on the outside were much bigger-8 feet. The tops were getting blown down from the wind and making them hard to catch. So I stuck to the smaller 4-5 foot waves on the inside. The video doesn’t give much sense of scale, but you can tell that the waves are coming over the pier a lot which is about 5 feet above the water. My Valley Rush was filling with water at the end of the video, watch where I am bracing whenever I shift my weight. I found the leaks and will be fixing them.

Great fun to get out and grab some waves. Water was warm and the sun came out at the end. Perfect day on the water, leaks in the surf kayak aside. I can’t wait for a day with more sustained waves and a drop-off on the wind. I am really jonesing for another surf day. When you haven’t been out in a while that first look at a major surf zone with a bunch of soup is pretty intimidating. You can tell when I relaxed after the first ride when I smiled a little.

This new band Horse Feathers has a certain panache. It is certainly a Red House Painters panache, but I am buying what they are selling. I like the strings and the instrumentation.

To add insult to injury, I think that is my dream Volvo Wagon in the background. A Silver Volvo SL 1990′s wagon! Put a Thule rack on it with a kayak stacker, and a bike stand, and call it good. I could play this tune between Kalamazoo and Santa Cruz for a two week kayak safari and be very happy.

I am off to Grand Marais for the GLSKS Symposium tomorrow morning. I hope there is surf like last year. I am excited to do some instruction and work with Steve Scherrer on a class.

I have been trying to write more articles and do less “posting”. However this particular video found through questionable means is possible the best thing I have ever seen from user submitted video.

And to answer my own non-paddling friends inevitable question, yes I know I am the person described in the video, minus the SUV.

So for those of us who are too focused on paddling, maybe go out and drink some beers, play some frisbee, and chill the hell out!!!

Jesca Hoop Album finally released

Jesca Hoop, will finally release her debut album KISMET. She is also on tour. Not sure if I can make her show at the Magic Stick in Detroit, but I would like I love to go. I first heard Jesca on Nic Harcourt’s Morning Becomes Eclectic Show. If you haven’t heard Morning Becomes eclectic it’s a great music show and well worth a listen. I know my trendy LA friends will scoff at me for even mentioning Nic Harcourt, but I think it’s a great show.

St. Vincent, and her demo of Paris is burning from the album, Marry Me.

I really like her voice and her sound. Been listening to this all day.

Otherworldly and distinct are hackeneyed ways of saying she’s got a good vibe going on. I can’t wait to hear the whole album.

Life has thrown some curve balls this week, Homer as always can put an heroic scale on every day problems. I just need some Greeks to help me take the topless tower of Ilium.

Also if the wind could blow, I’d be Muuuuuuuuccccccch happier.

I am a sucker for this tune.

It’s somewhat ironic to me how the visual at the peak of the song is exactly how I feel when I hear the song. I am poised at the bottom of hill on foot ready to run to the top and take flight right at the peak.

Music says some scary things don’t it…

Icelandic preteens smooching is also cute in a sort of scary viking way.
