Maverick Indoctrination

My Mega Maverick finally saw the sort of conditions it needed to properly surf our fresh water seas. Off Point Betsie Lighthouse near Frankfort Michigan this Sunday, 3-6 foot waves were pushing in from the southwest. It was a steady slug fest into the wind to get out. I caught a few outside rides, but …

Surf Kayak View of the Zone

The video isn’t necessarily spectacular, but it is fairly representative of the paddlers view in the surf zone. Notice how he starts unconciously grinning as soon as he catches a wave. It’s infectious. Also note that he is not wearing a helmet. Get a helmet dude!

Waiting for it to blow

Now as always, I am waiting for the storms of spring to bring some waves my way. The waiting is killing me. Watching the lake cam when it’s calm is like watching a television tuned to a dead channel. After a while you think you start to see a pattern where there is none.

San Diego in my Eye

Two words- reef break. Ok it was also a great family vacation to boot, we had a gas with the kids going to sea world, the wild animal park, and board surfing at Ocean Beach. The hardest part about being in San Diego was watching other people catch great waves while I was boogie boarding. …

Confidence, the virtue of the damned.

I saw the wind was dropping off. After my beating earlier in the week, my pride was fanny smacked, and wanted another shot at the title. So I saddled back up to head out. I unloaded at South Haven south beach again. The wind was further out of the northwest this time. The waves were …

No one knows you are a kayak ninja when you’re dead.

I cycled in to work yesterday through driving snow and building wind. My bike pushed me about 2 feet side ways with one solid gust on a downhil portion of the ride to downtown Kalamazoo. The forecast predicted a wersterly 30 knot gale force wind that would die over the course of the day into …

With or Without You

I know that I wrote something about “Crazy For You, But Not That Crazy” last fall. Ok that was a load of bollocks. It just depends on how long it’s been since I’ve been surfing. If I had to pick a song lyric, it’s probably: “With or Without You.” How many U2 posts can I …

Blood of the Father

Last post got me to thinking about the defining moments in any young man’s life. I am blessed in my own way to know what that moment was in my father’s life, or at least what he has told me that moment was. And in sharing that moment with me, I have a better grasp …

The thinning of the blood

In the icelandic sagas, the characters have particular concern for the thinning of the blood from their fathers. Sons tried to measure up to fathers. And it was considered very grave if men failed the muster of their genealogy. Or if their fathers were particularly bad men, they did everything possible to break the bad …

Crazy for you but not that crazy

The only problem with being crazy is that you don’t recognize your own behavior as insane. But if today was any indication of sanity, I might have displayed it. I drove to Silver Beach to surf after the Grand Mere Grind, 10k trail race. I took one look at the beach there and decided the …
